How Stress Contributes to Being Overweight

Let’s explore how stress contributes to weight gain.  When your stress levels rise, stress hormones are released into your blood stream at high levels.  

Continued for long enough, stress can lead to disease and health problems, particularly if Cortisol is then released into your bloodstream. 

What happens with high stress, is chronic elevated levels of cortisol can suppress your immune system, increase blood pressure and sugar levels in your blood. 

Imbalances in blood sugar levels create a ‘spike and dip’ process that enhances cravings for sugary foods. 

These high levels of stress hormones will eventually lead to a ‘crash’.  

The place where you feel overwhelmed and experience feelings like an inability to cope, sadness, depression, physical illness, loneliness, guilt and despair. 

We can then use food as a coping mechanism to numb ourselves, create distraction, or compensate our feelings with the reward of food. 

This habit forming behaviour of emotional overeating, leads to weight gain when continued long enough. 

It can also create cycles of binge eating and yo-yo dieting, which can further affect our emotions and how we feel about ourselves.

When we take the time to address our feelings and emotions, we can lower our stress levels and reduce our psycho-emotional connection to food.

Weight Loss & the Emotional, Physical & Spiritual Body

Apart from your physical health and well-being, the emotional and spiritual body also needs to be in balance.

It’s important to incorporate daily practices into your day that help release emotions, reduce stress and bring you back to a place of peace, balance and acceptance.

When emotions come up that you find difficult to deal with, it’s important to challenge your perception of how you are looking situations.

Work through your feelings versus pushing them down, numbing them with food and other distracting behaviors that delay dealing with them.

Ask yourself ‘What Am I feeling right now and why is it coming up for me?’ 

Journaling out your feelings to get clarity can help, a beautiful walk in nature is just as therapeutic.

If you can’t figure it out, let go in that moment and tackle the issue when you are feeling better.  

It’s always up to you to create a sense of positivity and optimism in how you approach life, and life’s challenges. 

How Much Exercise Should We Be Doing?

If you want to lose weight and keep it off, exercising and moving your body regularly is incredibly important for your health, vitality and muscle mass.

The key to fitness is finding something you enjoy that suits your body. 

Aim to exercise five (5) times a week for a minimum of 30 minutes, ideally though aim for 45 minutes to 1 hour each time.

Starting any new fitness routine will be challenging in the first 3 weeks, as your body and muscles adjust to doing more exercise. So take it easy!

Once you get into exercising regularly each week, it will just become part of your lifestyle.  You will find over time that your body will crave exercise.

You may also want to consider doing those things that bring more light into the spiritual body.  Things like yoga, guided meditations, gentle walks in nature, reading your own oracle cards, and spiritual practices you enjoy.

They all help to increase the light quotient in your energy body (chi energy) and spiritual body, to get you into higher states of consciousness. 

Which helps raise your vitality and overall sense of wellbeing.
